Mike Mechem: Bio

I have been a professional musician since performing with my father's dance band in high school.  I studied with an amazing drum teacher, John McMahan.  My father, Larry Mechem Sr. had a 9 piece band with great arrangements written by extremely fine writers in the Indianapolis area.  The band worked almost every weekend.  Earn while you learn!

A very important experience in high school was the opportunity to attend Tanglewood Music Camp and study with percussionists from the Boston Symphony.  After high school I attended Indiana University for one year and decided to leave school to focus on playing drums professionally.

After meeting a great pianist, Isiah Sanders (Steve Wonder) at college, I would be hired by him to go to Jackson Mississippi to work for about a year at a club there.  On completion of that gig I went on the road with the Ice Show and completed 4 ten month tours.  I was referred by my greatest musical and drumming mentor, John Von Ohlen.  This was a great opportunity to travel and build up drumming skills.  There was much to learn from Ben Stabler who was an old world conductor who had worked on the ice shows for many many years and was an accomplished writer and trumpet player as well.  After the final tour with the ice show, I moved back to Indiana to freelance there.

The next period of time was focused on extensive traveling with various artists and shows before finally making a move to New York City.  An after-school teaching position opened up at a private school in Brooklyn close to my residence so I pursued teaching as well as performing in NYC for a period of time.

While in NYC, I went back to college and graduated with a BBA Summa Cum Laude from Pace University.  In 1992, a tour of 42nd Street took me to Europe which is where I met my wife.  We were married one year later and continued to live in NYC until the spring of 2001.  We moved to Las Vegas which is where we reside now.

There have been some very important musical collaborations in Las Vegas including a 10 year position as drummer and musical director with Michael Grimm who won America's Got Talent in 2010.

Besides drumming I have recently finished a composition project which features a full orchestral suite of all original music.  The suite contains 10 movements with a playing time of 52 minutes.  The feedback from notable sources has been incredibly positive.

Currently, I am working 7 nights a week including a live afternoon radio show at the Southpoint Hotel.
